Fairness and Efficiency in Processor Sharing Protocols to Minimize Sojourn Times
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider the problem of designing a preemptive protocol that is both fair and efficient when one is only concerned with the sojourn time of the job and not intermediate results. Our Fair Sojourn Protocol (FSP) is both efficient, in a strong sense (similar to the shortest remaining processing time protocol – SRPT), and fair, in the sense of guaranteeing that it outperforms processor sharing (PS) for every nonterminal job in every busy period for any sample path while providing the same performance for the terminal job. Our primary motivation is web serving in which the standard protocol is PS, while recent work proposes using SRPT or variants. Our work suggests both a framework in which to evaluate proposed protocols and an attractive new protocol, FSP. ∗Work supported in part by National Science Foundation Grant No. ANI–9730162. Efficient fair algorithms for message communication
A computer network serves distributed applications by communicating messages between their remote ends. Many such applications desire minimal delay for their messages. Beside this efficiency objective, allocation of the network capacity is also subject to the fairness constraint of not shutting off communication for any individual message. Processor Sharing (PS) is a de facto standard of fairne...
متن کاملExplicit formulas for the variance of conditioned sojourn times in M/D/1-PS
For the M/D/1 processor sharing queue, explicit formulas for the coefficient of variation of the sojourn time conditioned on the service time and on the residual service times of the tasks found on arrival are derived via branching representations. keywords: processor sharing, sojourn times, variance, branching
متن کاملSojourn Times in Non-Homogeneous QBD Processes with Processor Sharing
We study sojourn times of customers in a processor sharing model with a service rate that varies over time, depending on the number of customers and on the state of a random environment. An explicit expression is derived for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the sojourn time conditional on the state upon arrival and the amount of work brought into the system. Particular attention is given to t...
متن کاملOn the Sojourn times for Many-queue Head-of-the-line Processor-sharing Systems with Permanent Customers on the Sojourn times for Many-queue Head-of-the-line Processor-sharing Systems with Permanent Customers 1
We consider a single server system consisting of n queues with diierent types of customers (Poisson streams) and k permanent customers. The permanent customers and those at the head of the queues are served in processor-sharing by the service facility (head-of-the-line processor-sharing). The stability condition and a pseudo work conservation law will be given for arbitrary service time distrib...
متن کاملOn sojourn times in the finite capacity M/M/1 queue with processor sharing
We consider a processor shared M/M/1 queue that can accommodate at most a finite number K of customers. We give an exact expression for the sojourn time distribution in the finite capacity model, in terms of a Laplace transform. We then give the tail behavior, for the limit K → ∞, by locating the dominant singularity of the Laplace transform. keywords: finite capacity, processor sharing, sojour...
